Few natural phenomena inspire travel quite like a solar eclipse. Occurring when the moon passes directly between the earth and the sun, these rare celestial events transform familiar landscapes into moments of extraordinary stillness. On 12 August 2026, the eclipse will be best experienced from Iceland and Spain, including the mainland and the Balearics. The land of fire and ice will take centre stage, with the path of totality crossing western Iceland for the first time in centuries, particularly areas near Reykjavík. Further south, Spain will offer remarkable perspectives, from Mallorca’s Tramuntana mountains to the country’s dramatic coastlines and countryside. Here is our edit of hotels from which to experience this unforgettable spectacle.
Torfhús, South Iceland
Southern Iceland’s vast lava fields, glacier-topped volcanoes and low levels of light pollution make it one of Europe’s best places to experience the sky, whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights or witnessing the solar eclipse. Torfhús in Selfoss sits at the heart of this dramatic landscape, close to the Golden Circle and within easy reach of waterfalls, black sand beaches and geothermal wonders. Inspired by traditional Icelandic turf houses, its private lodges feature basalt stone hot pools filled with naturally heated water, offering a peaceful place to reflect after a day spent exploring Iceland’s extraordinary scenery. Selfoss will experience a deep partial solar eclipse with over 95% coverage.
Hotel Rangá, South Iceland
One of Iceland’s leading stargazing hotels, Hotel Rangá is perfectly placed for a celestial escape. Surrounded by open countryside in southern Iceland, its remote location and expansive views create ideal conditions for experiencing a solar eclipse against a backdrop of glaciers, volcanoes and rivers. When you’re not looking skywards, explore nearby waterfalls and ice caves before returning to Rangá’s cosy, timber-clad interiors. The hotel’s observatory, outdoor hot tubs and restaurant showcasing Icelandic produce make it an exceptional base. On August 12, the hotel will experience a 99% deep partial solar eclipse, beginning at 16:47 and ending at 18:59.

Torre del Marqués Hotel Spa & Winery, Matarraña, Spain
Located in Aragón’s peaceful Matarraña region, Torre del Marqués combines clear rural skies with complete tranquillity – ideal for experiencing the drama of a solar eclipse away from the crowds. This corner of northern Spain lies close to the path of the rare total solar eclipse, when totality will occur in the early evening, with the sun hanging low above the western horizon just before sunset. Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, the hotel also offers easy access to medieval villages, scenic walking trails and the unspoilt landscapes of inland Aragón.
Palacio de Luces, Asturias, Spain
Between the Bay of Biscay and the Picos de Europa, Palacio de Luces is perfectly positioned to experience Asturias at its best. The region lies directly beneath the path of totality for the solar eclipse, when the evening sky above the Atlantic will briefly fall dark. Housed in a beautifully restored 16th-century palace, the hotel offers an elegant base for exploring colourful fishing villages, dramatic coastal paths and Asturias’ emerald-green landscapes.
Cap Rocat, Mallorca, Spain
Although Mallorca falls just outside the path of totality, the island is expected to experience a spectacular deep partial solar eclipse, with the late afternoon light creating an unforgettable atmosphere across the Mediterranean. Perched dramatically above the Bay of Palma, Cap Rocat’s uninterrupted sea views provide a remarkable vantage point for watching the sky transform. The former 19th-century military fortress combines striking architecture, fantastic dining and a tranquil clifftop spa overlooking the coastline.
Torralbenc, Menorca, Spain
Menorca is expected to experience one of Europe’s most impressive partial views of the solar eclipse, making the island an appealing alternative for those seeking a quieter Mediterranean escape. Overlooking vineyards and the sea, Torralbenc is offering two experiences to take in the changing skies: at the finca over a special dinner arranged in the room with the best vantage point, and from the sea aboard Talatí, its traditional Menorcan llaüt, where dinner will be served with the backdrop of the endless horizon.
Teranka, Formentera, Spain
On the southern shores of Formentera, Teranka is marking the solar eclipse with a thoughtfully considered programme designed around one of the summer’s rarest celestial moments. Guests can experience a dedicated Eclipse Day, featuring sound meditation, rooftop cocktails, eclipse storytelling, guided viewing and a garden dinner as the sun returns, or extend the experience with a three-night retreat combining the full eclipse programme with island wellbeing rituals, from botanical walks and ceramic workshops to paddleboarding and restorative spa treatments.
