Independent Minds: Snow Yang, The Dawn Luxury Hotel

For Snow Yang and her parents, Fuyun Yang and Yanping Bai, preserving the past of their 128-year-old property near the mist-shrouded peaks of Weibao Mountain, while looking to the future, shapes The Dawn Luxury Hotel into a beautifully balanced stay. The siheyuan-inspired suites surrounding four, season-reflecting courtyards add to the sense of harmony, with yet more restorative powers in the hands of the spa’s in-house aromatherapist, who creates customised essential oil blends for each guest. Personalisation is prioritised throughout the experience, with an attentive team of butlers bringing the best of Weishan to you.

While our interiors are thoughtfully crafted to exude both comfort and authenticity, we also incorporate innovative yet elegant ancient Chinese architectural design elements based on our property’s heritage.

Do you have a vision for the future of the hotel?

First and foremost, I hope to see a more peaceful world and greater openness in global travel. This increased openness may have the potential to solve many other problems, as once these larger issues are addressed, others may seem smaller in comparison. I would also like to see more eco-friendly amenities and for more attention to be paid to cultural heritage. As the world is modernising at an unprecedented speed, we must strive to protect time-honoured traditions and cultural heritage.

The natural highs of hiking solo in Costa Rica’s cloud forest

Out of nowhere, a stark yet melodic chirp punctuates the dense moss-heavy virgin forest, halting me in my tracks with its hypnotic, unadulterated beauty. I later discover it was likely the song of a black-faced solitaire, a bird that’s rare to see, yet glorious to the ears. And just one
