From a pink-hued mansion in Mexico City’s coolest neighbourhood to a secluded cove on Türkiye’s Turquoise Coast, November’s newest additions to the SLH collection span historic hideaways, design-led city stays and nature-framed retreats. Inside, discover restored palazzos, private hot-spring baths and mirrored forest cabins beside Oregon’s Rogue River in the US.
The Houghton Hotel, Johannesburg, South Africa
Designed by Boogertman + Partners with interiors by DSGN, The Houghton Hotel pairs sculptural architecture with bespoke furnishings, contemporary art and expansive glass windows framing Johannesburg’s leafy Houghton Estate and the fairways of its neighbouring golf club. The vibe is closer to a private residential enclave than a conventional city hotel, with spacious suites and striking penthouses offering everything from private pools to rooftop entertaining areas. Beyond the golf course, you can spend time in the sprawling spa, try chef Candice Philip’s modern European cooking at Cyra, or go for something more casual at Nova Bistro.
Tu Tu’ Tun Lodge, Gold Beach, Oregon, USA
On the banks of Oregon’s Rogue River, seven miles from the Pacific, Tu Tu’ Tun Lodge combines the rugged materials of a Pacific Northwest lodge with striking contemporary design. Its mirrored glass cabins reflect the surrounding forest and water, with private patios positioned beside the river or a forest creek; elsewhere, wood-burning fireplaces, cedar details and outdoor soaking tubs bring the landscape into the rooms. The adults-only retreat is as much about food as fishing and kayaking: chef Derek Piva cooks over live fire, drawing on the lodge’s garden and local farmers and fishermen for seasonal menus that include handmade pasta and Pacific seafood.

Its 100 rooms range from contemporary bedrooms with private balconies to a suite with a separate sitting room, fireplace and freestanding bath to really get comfortable and cosy up. The private cinema is an unusual extra for a city hotel, whether for a private screening or a quieter evening indoors. At 62 Drury Street Bar & Brasserie, the menu follows the Irish seasons, with dishes such as Wicklow lamb and Atlantic stone bass alongside Irish craft gin and whiskey.

Hotel GrandBach Atami Crescendo, Atami, Japan
At 361 metres above sea level on Mount Izu, Hotel GrandBach Atami Crescendo looks across the treetops towards Sagami Bay. Its 16 rooms are dressed in sandy beige, inspired by Atami’s coastline, and each has a private hot-spring bath, with a selection of rooms opening onto the forest air. Music is woven into the experience, with the scores of Bach providing the soundtrack to evenings. At Fuga, French cuisine takes its cues from the surrounding region, using seasonal seafood and produce sourced within 50 kilometres. Afterwards, retreat to the barrel sauna, or pour a Japanese whisky at Magdalena Bar.
Casona Roma Norte, Mexico City, Mexico
Behind its rose-pink Belle Époque façade, Casona Roma Norte reimagines a 1920s mansion as an art-filled, contemporary hotel in one of Mexico City’s most creative and fashionable neighbourhoods. High ceilings and wooden floors meet marble bathrooms, handmade Oaxacan rugs and modern Mexican artwork, including striking pieces by local artists. But the hotel’s character extends well beyond its interiors. Its culinary line-up includes Suchi’s Japanese-Sinaloan cuisine, Akamba’s agave tastings and La Macaria’s Japanese teas paired with Mexican pastries. Upstairs, the rooftop bar offers a change of view, while Roma Norte’s galleries, cafés and independent boutiques are just outside the door.

Palazzo Balsamo Boutique Hotel, Palermo, Italy
In Palermo’s historic centre, Palazzo Balsamo gives a former aristocratic residence a contemporary identity without losing sight of its storied past. The building’s story includes an unexpected piece of local history: in 1872, Baron Antonio Balsamo converted its former stables into an innovative space, and today an early bicycle commissioned by him greets guests in the entrance hall. Inside, curved furnishings, warm oak tones, tactile surfaces and sculptural lighting soften grand architectural features. Mornings bring a further taste of Sicily, with breakfast devised by Michelin-starred chef Giuseppe Costa, serving up plates such as Sicilian toast layered with ricotta cream, local sausage and wild herbs, and Pan-Mango made with fruit from the family’s own farm.
